There is no two opinions about the quality of the drama, by Late Gopal Prashad Rimal, but it’s the story and screenplay writer who tarnishes the master piece by making such mediocre movie.
Audience is unaware, where the story is going during the first half. While elaborate depth to portray the human emotions, the confrontation between the characters and within oneself is missing in the second half. The director has wasted ample footage even to justify minuscule point, but lacks to justify the significant theme of the drama.

Despite brilliant post production and rich cinematography (most of the times), lauding performance by main leads specially ‘Helen’ played by Keki the movie falls flat due to poor screenplay, editing and above all worst direction. I am no movie maker to judge and dissect each and every frame of the movie, or to say about cost and effort needed to bring out whatever the director has served on the screen for 1:40 Hrs, but as a viewer and avid cinema lover, I can say the movie was complete disappointment.
Masan is a story set in early Rana regime period, probably few years after 1990 B.S. earthquake, is take upon the male dominant society.
How man can (ab)use women both physically and emotionally in a society without any penalty. The director has chosen to show those repressed emotions and agony of women subtly, which is the biggest mistake any drama maker makes.
The movies does have some highs; like for instant when Subhadra Adhikary says ‘Everyone needs Kanchi Wife…’. Also when she asks, “what if the ‘kanchi’ wife gives birth to a girl baby instead of boy ?” gives idea of the society that these characters live in. Despite being embellished with such strong words, the script and screenplay writer couldn’t come up with something creative to match those lines of Gopal Prashad Rimal, which in turns off the viewer with UNWANTED long footages irrelevant to the story.
In a gist, the movie beings with a couple; Helen (Keki) & her husband (Raj Ballav Koirala), Helen is barren due to her husband’s fault of overdosing her with contraceptive medicines. Interestingly Helen is unaware of this crime done by her husband. She needs a MALE baby, that too from her husband, at any cost. She dreams of that baby, despite being one of the foster parents of a boy (who is their own nephew). Her only way to get the baby is to let his husband marry another woman and impregnate her. Despite so many objections by her husband, she persuades her husband to marry the other women (Nita Dhungana). But, things just get complicated once the baby boy is born.
How a happy home can turn into graveyard (Masan) with one small mistake, that surrounds the remaining part of the movie. Unfortunately, it takes more than 3/4th of the movie to reach this point, by then you are almost bored. The whole face-off between the two wives, confrontation and self guilt of Raj and Raj’s final marriage, which could have been major highlights of the movie are shortened, while unwanted shots of marriage ceremony, railway tracks and Hindi passenger conversation, bed scenes are elaborated which does not help the story to progress.
In terms of performance, almost all actors have done fantastic job, especially both Keki & Nita have played their characters perfectly. Raj’s has also underplayed the role as per the demand of the script. Only annoying character is the person who played Raj’s father. His imprudent laughing behavior mess the flow of the story.
Had the director and script writer took just an inspiration from the drama and adapted the story in his own style the movie might have turned better, but without any kind of creativity shown in the script, direction and editing department, the movie just becomes a regular passable fare and makes mockery of such great drama.
