Android 4.4 KitKat build for Samsung Galaxy S4, Note 3 shows redesigned UI

Written By Pikford Junior on Monday, January 13, 2014 | 4:17 AM

It looks like Samsung is finally trying to follow some of the design guidelines stated by Google for Android. A leaked ROM of an Android 4.4.2 build for Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 reveal at least one significant UI change.

Samsung will no longer have coloured icons in the status bar, in keeping with the 4.4.2 KitKat guidelines. So with the update your notification icons turn white. In addition, Samsung has also placed a camera icon on the lockscreen for quick access.

We can’t tell much else from the images of the build. SamMobile says there’s a little bump in the performance, and benchmark scores have also increased. It also says Samsung has changed the keyboard on the build with improvements in landscape orientation, which supposedly make typing and gesture typing easier.

As per the new KiKat UI design, the album art of the currently playing track takes up the entire lockscreen for a more impactful visual effect. There is not much difference between the builds for the S4 and the Note 3, with the exception of any changes in the stylus-specific apps on the latter. We expect both builds to be more or less the same, when the final version hits devices.

Considering this is a leaked build, there could be quite a few changes when the final update rolls out. Those interested in flashing the leaked build, can grab the relevant files for the Note 3 and the Galaxy S4. It must be noted that flashing the test firmware will wipe all data. So, it is advisable to create a backup.

Apple tax: Is Macbook Air really cheaper than a comparable Windows PC?

Earlier today, a report in the Financial Express said there’s no longer an ‘Apple Tax’ on buying Macs. The report specifically compares an 11-inch Macbook Air to a Sony Vaio Pro, which is supposedly the closest competitor to the Air. The price difference between the two machines was found to be in the region of Rs 8,000, with the Apple machine priced lower. The conclusion arrived was that since there was no longer an ‘Apple Tax’, since even Windows PCs have gotten a lot more expensive.

That’s a stretch even going by the very machines compared in the original piece. For example, the Macbook Air had an 11.6-inch display with 1366×768 resolution. That, by the way, is the same size and resolution of the Acer C720 Chromebook, which has a tag of Rs 22,999. On the other hand, the Vaio Pro has a full HD 11.6-inch panel, which obviously is more suited for multitasking with multiple windows, and offers more real estate for any design-related work, not to mention a better gaming experience (it’s a different matter that this is a Mac we are talking about).

Both machines have fourth generation Intel processors, but Apple has clocked it lower (1.3GHz) than Sony (1.6GHz). The RAM and SSD capacity is the same on both machines, but Sony adds NFC support, which is featured in most high-end smartphones these days too and does add a measure of convenience. As we saw in our review, the speakers on the Vaio Pro are quite good for a machine of its size. What’s more the Sony machine is around 200g lighter than the Air. So the higher price is justified with a corresponding rise in value. And there’s not much to separate the two PCs based on just build quality as the Sony machine is equally well made.

The original comparison plainly ignores these facts. We have to agree with the fact that Windows PCs have become more expensive and the higher end now sits quite far away from the entry-level PCs in terms of price. This is largely down to the emphasis on Ultrabooks and hybrid form factors, which have added to the production costs. Moreover with Windows 8, the focus is very much on touch and this also adds to the machine cost. But when it comes to comparable machines, there’s still quite a bit of ‘Apple Tax’ to be paid when going for a Mac.

The watch is said to be part of the Nexus brand and will reportedly be announced on Oct. 31, according to Android Police co-founder Artem Russakovski. Although Google hasn’t made any announcements just yet, the company published a smartwatch patent a few months ago detailing a watch with a user interface similar to Glass. . An earlier patent from 2012 depicts a smartwatch with a flip-up display, but as of now its still unclear if either device will come to market. For instance, the watch described in the filing would feature two touchpads on its wristband that can understand gestures such as pinching or stretching, just like Glass’ single pad

Google is just one of several major tech brands rumored to dive into the smartwatch space within the next year. The Gem joins the likes of Apple’s long-fabled iWatch and Microsoft and LG’s rumored wrist-worn gadgets.  A recent study from NextMarket reported that more than 373 million smartwatches will ship by 2020 compared to the 15 million projected for 2014, suggesting that wearable tech could become a major part of the mobile market soon enough.Samsung just launched its Galaxy Gear smartwatch that is designed to work with its Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014), which means it can forward notifications, run apps, answer and make phone calls among other smartphone capabilities.

Google is also expected to announce its next flagship smartphone, the Nexus 5, in tandem with Android 4.4 Kit Kat. The Nexus 4 successor is rumored to come with a roaring Snapdragon 800 processor, a 5.2-inch display and an improved camera that could implement Nikon’s technology.

Android Locator Program Unveiled by Google

Written By Pikford Junior on Friday, August 16, 2013 | 5:38 AM

The Android Master Google  announced a new feature for Android Cellphones that will bring relief to millions of Android users, the feature is essentially a way to locate lost or stole phones and it is about time that Google got this set up. For years now Apple has had a “find your iPhone” service that allowed users to quickly and easily locate their device, Google’s service is expected to be very similar to Apple’s.

Essentially the idea is simple, by registering your Android device you will be able to remotely access it for number of functions. First and foremost it will be possible to turn on GPS to help locate the phone. Google has also made it clear that they’re going to make it possible for users to completely wipe all personal data remotely, that way if they suspect the phone has been stolen it will only take a few clicks to remove any sensitive information.

All of this is absolutely great news for anyone with an Android phone because Google is planning to support basically all versions of Android. The new feature is expected to become publicly available in the coming weeks and odds are it will be a huge hit with everyone.Google expects to be the software a huge success for everyone and claims that it may be helpful to some extent for those people who cant locate their GPS,
